Consisting of thirty-nine measures, this completion of the unfinished final movement from J. S. Bach's Art of Fugue faithfully brings back the opening subject found in Contrapunctus 1, thereby realizing the composer's plan for a quadruple fugue combining three other subjects including the famous B-A-C-H subject.
Unique to this completion is the manner in which the contrapuntal texture has been thoughtfully preserved. No sudden displays of nineteenth-century pianistic effects interrupt the fugal textures of this complex and enigmatic work.
Commencing at measure 239, where Bach left off, the piece presents each of the four subjects in a number of voices and tonal areas. As well, non-thematic passages alternate effectively with thematic ones, providing relief to the interplay of subjects.
This ending is suitable for advanced performers, teachers and students alike.
