Product Description

Many African American spirituals have dual meanings. On the surface, "Wade in the Water" is about Christian baptism or the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Harriet Tubman used the song as a code to remind enslaved people who were escaping to get into a body of water when slavecatchers dogs were after them. God helps by troubling the water so the dogs would have an even harder time catching the escapees scent. The original verses are wonderful but rather opaque (by design), so I wrote two new verses to make the message and setting of this song more apparent for the modern audience.

This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard's global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.
