Vivaldi chose to end his Op.1 for two violins and continuo with a sonata based on the "Folia" theme. The theme is less a melody and more a chord progression but is recognized as one of the earliest of such themes in European repertoire. Since the 17th century, composers such as Lully, Bach, Liszt, Beethoven, and Rachmaninov have utilized the theme in their compositions. This arrangement for clarinet quartet (3Bb,Bass) gives each part ample time in the spotlight and is always an audience favorite.
