This piece is an arrangement for band of the American folk song "Shenandoah" and the Scottish folks song "Loch Lomond." These two songs are both, as the title suggests, songs of parting ways. They are songs reflecting the aching longing for those we have loved and particularly for a specific place with which the beloved is associated. Also, despite originating on different continents these songs share a similar harmonic language that lends itself very well to this adaptation.
