On vacation at the Oregon coast, early one morning in 1999, when nobody else in the family was up, realizing it was July 4, I grabbed a piece of scrap paper and began setting the beginning of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence to music. Having been required as a child to memorize it (and the preamble to the Constitution), being a public school music teacher, I thought this would be a good way for my students to learn this treasure of American and political literature.
We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, endowed with unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
