The beginner should be able to count well and play 3 sharps. The upper part is fairly easy, often playing both hands in octaves, or only using one hand at a time. The bottom part is much fuller and fills in well. The first verse is fairly straight forward and familiarizes the listener with the melody. In the second verse, the lower part plays a flowing eighth note rhythm while the upper part plays the melody. In the third verse the lower part takes the melody while the upper part plays a simple, moving obligato. The final chorus is stately and grand with the song slowing down and softening at the end. This popular melody, written by Thomas Koshat first appeared in a volume of German folksongs in 1879.
