Product Description

This song was first released by Sir Elton John on his double album of the same name in 1973.  Sara Bareilles recorded and released the song in 2013, on her album "Brave Enough: Live at the Variety Playhouse".  Bareille's version features a drastic reharmonisation of the piano accompaniment, giving the introductory bars a melancholy air, and turbocharging the emotive content of the chorus.  The vocal melody remains largely unchanged apart from some challenging embellishments.

The vocal part is in the Contralto register, written from E3 to E5 (i.e. from E three ledger lines below the stave to E on the top space of the stave.) The range is an octave and a seventh - nearly two octaves.

The piano part is deceptively simple but contains some syncopation, and quick moves in the left hand. The left hand spans no more than an octave, and in many bars is a single-note bass line. The right hand has repeating chord clusters. Students should take note of accents and crucial dynamic markings.

This song is ideal for an advanced singer to demonstrate their vocal range, as well as rhythm and pitch control. There are some long passages and sustained notes which will require excellent breathing technique.

Duration is about 4 minutes and 45 seconds
The sheet music is for piano and vocal (but no guitar chords) and is 8 pages long.
