Written in 1861, in the heat of the American Civil War, by composer George Poulton and lyricist WW Fosdick, this song quickly became one of the most popular tunes of the times. Through the years, the melody has been sung by leading crooners, most notably by Elvis Presley, who substituted the original lyrics about the "Maid with the Golden Hair" for his own: "Love me tender, Love me true".
