"Modal Allusions" challenges players in tonality and independence. The movements are not in the standard major and minor keys that younger players are used to: the first and second movements are influenced by the Dorian mode, and the third movement is influenced by Lydian tonality. The second movement also requires players to internalize the beat, as the two parts do not often move together.
