Product Description

The piece consists of a melody by the French romantic composer Charles Gounod specially designed to overlap with Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, from Book I by J.S. Bach. Although published in instrumental versions and equipped for various texts during Gounod's lifetime, the claim that he never wrote it actually appears to be literally true. Father-in-law Gounao Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmermann transcribed the improvisation and in 1853 made an arrangement for violin (or cello), with piano and harmonium. In the same year, the song appeared in the words of Alphonse de Lamartine in the poem Le livre de la vie ("The book of life"). In 1859 Jacques Léopold Heugel published a Latin version of the text. The version of Bach's prelude used by Gounod has the addition of a compass (m.23), found only in the manuscript by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke and in the print edition by Nikolaus Simrock which was based on it, but not in Bach's other manuscripts. or the printed work by academic Bischoff or G. Henle Verlag Urtext.  Intermediate Level Format: Concert 9 x 12 inches. 10 pages.
