Italian composer, Alessandro Scarlatti, is known for his operas and chamber cantatas, and he was also the father to Domenico Scarlatti, whose piano music is very well-known to this day.
This piece was originally written for an SATB choir. Exsultate Deo means Sing aloud to God, which is taken from Psalm 81 in the bible:
Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob
The alto and bass parts are more or less identical, and an octave apart. That said, this piece can be played with either alto or bass, if needed.
