Product Description

Sonata, Op. 28 for String Quartet
Contents: I. Allegro  II. Andante  III. Scherzo-Allegro vivace  IV. Rondo-Allegro ma non troppo.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, was published in 1801 and is commonly known as the "Pastoral Sonata." The historical context of this piece is characterized by Beethoven's growing reputation as a composer and pianist during the early 19th century, and this period marked a transition in Beethoven's style as he moved away from the dynamic and flashy "pianist-composer" approach to a more patient, poetic, and inward way of writing music. This is why it transcribes so effectively for the string quartet.

The sonata's nickname, "Pastoral," reflects Beethoven's inspiration from nature, a theme evident in many of his works. The sonata is also significant for its musical characteristics, such as its evocation of a calm and tranquil atmosphere and its dedication to Count Joseph von Sonnenfels, a prominent Austrian statesman and intellectual figure. These aspects of the historical context provide insight into Beethoven's artistic and personal development during the early 1800s.
