Product Description

This is Mr. Robinson's multi-level string orchestra arrangement of "Word-Up!" the ever-so-popular 1986 R&B classic funk song recorded by Atlanta's own Cameo. The cellos (both the advanced and novice) are playing double stops on the D and A string through much of this piece. The bass part can be played arco throughout, pizzicato where indicated, or the section can be divided where half would play arco and the other half play pizzicato. Electric bass guitar can also be played as long as the volume is not overpowering. There are some 16th note figures that the inner parts play in sections; very catchy and fun ("Mississippi hotdog, Mississippi dog").

Mr. Robinson originally arranged this song for his elementary string orchestra (grades 4-7) in 1986 when it was popular. The students caught on very well, even without the "novice" parts. Eventually, his two youth orchestras (Dekalb Youth Pops Orchestra and Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia of Metropolitan Atlanta) performed it numerous times. It is a favorite of many alums of both orchestras.

The percussion parts are "grand-staffed" where the students can either play a drum set or the set parts on separate instruments (snare, tenor, bass, and cymbals). Maracas and tambourine are added as well. The piano part brings enhancement to the experience. Consider using two, three, or more electric keyboards.

This song is still popular today. Through the years, the historically black college and university bands played it featuring their dance teams, majorettes, etc. It is even played at parties everywhere. The audiences really enjoy this energetic song.
