Product Description

This poem and its musical setting were written at the request of mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis and her fashion designer husband, Allan Virgo, for the western-inspired collection he presented at New York Fashion Week, 2023. The inspiration is the Black cowhands who populated the western plains of the United States in the latter part of the 19th century. Many were born enslaved, while some were one generation removed from bondage. The word cowboy comes from the practice of belittling Black men by refusing to verbally acknowledge their manhood. Life on the range was difficult, but provided far more liberty than many of the cowhands would have experienced otherwise.
