Brahms' Vergebliches Ständchen - Niederrheinisches Volkslied (Futile Serenade - Lower Rhein folk song) from his Fünf Romanzen und Lieder (Five Romances and Songs), Op. 48 (1882) - originally for voice and piano, adapted here by Jeremy S. Martin for soprano vocalist with concert band accompaniment. This bemused and amusing song quickly became a favorite with the public in Brahms' own time and has not loosened its grip in the intervening decades. Close attention to Brahms' call for animation and good humor pays dividends here, as does a feeling for sharp attack and rhythmic precision. If the singer is amused, the audience will be, too.
