Four Cotillions

Francis Johnson (1792-1844) was a pioneering African American composer and musician who flourished in antebellum Philadelphia. A virtuoso of the keyed bugle and violin, he composed over 200 works, including patriotic marches, operatic airs, and popular dances. Notably, he was the first African American composer to have his work published. Originally published in 1818 as "Collection of New Cotillions" for piano, these lively dance pieces offer a glimpse into the vibrant social scene of early 19th-century America.

Johnson's musical talents were recognized not only in America but also in Europe. He led the first American musical ensemble to tour the continent, captivating audiences with his virtuosity.

Cotillions were popular ballroom dances characterized by intricate figures and elegant steps. Johnson's compositions, with their graceful melodies and rhythmic vitality, would have provided the perfect soundtrack for these fashionable gatherings. This arrangement for two flutes and strings by Yutaka Kono brings new life to these historic dances, showcasing their elegance and charm for a modern audience.
