his Sinfonietta for Strings is dedicated to the memory of John Cage. If it seems to have no connection whatsoever with Cage's music, it is no illusion, for it indeed has nonejust as Cage's music had no connection with himself... Beyond the excuse of an acrostic (he was a great lover of such literary games),
very freely and whimsically using the four letters of his name, this piece nevertheless has an indirect but sufficient connection to Cage insofar as the obsessive counterpoint governing its composition resembles the mushrooms of which he was an expertspreading from a single specimen throughout the undergrowth.

Admirers of Cage, mushrooms, and counterpoint will understand.

Thus, to pay tribute to him, I chose to write a piece in total distance or even opposition to his concerns, light-years away from his tasteswhich seems to me the most "Cagean" behavior possible, based on the idea that the surest way to be so is not to be so at all...
One may, if one wishes, find (aside from this mycological intrusion) other playful writing devices... ad libitum...
