Product Description

'The Onedin Line' is a classic BBC drama series set in 19th century Liverpool, and narrating the changing fortunes of the ambitious Captain James Onedin and his family. The series illustrates some of the changes in business and shipping, such as from wooden to steel ships and from sailing ships to steamships; it also shows the role that ships played in such matters as international politics, uprisings and the slave trade. Traditional folk music, such as sea shanties, are heard throughout the series, but the music behind the sweeping opening credits is an excerpt from the 'Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia' from the ballet "Spartacus" by Aram Khachaturian, itself turned into a song called 'For My Love'. This majestic theme is often called one of the greatest melodies of the 20th century, and it certainly tugs at the heart strings, deserving a large, resonant acoustic to really let it sing out.
