Product Description

The Thirteenth Station of The Cross - Jesus is Taken Down From The Cross for solo piano, is the thirteenth movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The entire piano cycle is characterized by recurring themes that appear in other movements of the entire piano cycle of 15 pieces or movements entitled The Stations of the Cross for Solo Piano by John Cartée. However in this movement because of the fact that Jesus is now dead and is in the care of loved ones, the music presented is different in rhythm and mood to the rest of the piano cycle.

This soft and contemplative movement tries to reflect the sadness of the lifeless body of Jesus as he is removed from The Cross. The steady music centres on broken chords with an offbeat melody floating above it. This reflects the love and tenderness of Jesus pallbearers. The word pall or pallium is derived from the Roman pallium or palla, a woolen cloak. It is also a vestment worn and bestowed by the Pope.

Jesus body was removed and wrapped by these pallbearers, and hence the solemn music reflects that stately emotion of giving respect to the dead King as he is taken down from The Cross and prepared for burial.

The ladder that was climbed upon when thou were dead to be taken down
When that I am in sin Lord, let me not die therein.
The pincers that drew the nails out, of feet and hands all about
And loosened the body from the tree, of my sins loose thou me.

Arma Christi roll ca. 1440 England
