Product Description

The Tenth Station of The Cross - Jesus is Stripped of His Garments for solo piano, is the tenth movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The music is characterized by recurring themes that appear in other movements of the entire piano cycle of 15 pieces or movements entitled The Stations of the Cross for Solo Piano by John Cartée. However in this movement because of the unique pain of having one's clothes forcibly removed by another, the music presented is different in rhythm and mood to the rest of the piano cycle.

The Tenth Station of The Cross opens with eerie unsettling responses between dissonant octaves in the upper register and a low harmonic chordal progression. The haunting contrast between these two elements represents the strange feeling of having ones clothes being removed against one's will, presenting a humiliating and degrading experience, creating a sense of bewilderment. This is portrayed by a three-note sequence reminiscent of The Theme of The Trinity (movements 4, 7 & 8) but the notes here are descending.

The music changes into a new section where the initial lower chordal element was presented, however this time is played sweetly and smoothly accompanied by an ethereal right hand sequence. This represents the love Jesus continues to exude in this new painful experience. A return to the opening section completes the movement.

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:7
