Song background; In 1991 Charlie Skarbek was commissioned by World Rugby (then the International Rugby Football Board - IRFB) to produce an anthem that encapsulated the spirit and values of the game. The resulting "World in Union" was first heard at the 1991 Rugby World Cup, held in England. In the first instance it was performed by New Zealand soprano Kiri Te Kanawa.

The familiar interpolated melody 'Thaxted' is taken from Gustav Holst's Jupiter (from his Planet Suite), but the iconic tune is probably best known for its use in the hymn I Vow To Thee My Country.

PJ Powers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo produced a version in 1995, with Shirley Bassey and Bryn Terfel performing it at the 1999 Rugby World Cup opening ceremony. The song was also featured in Invictus, the 2009 biographical sports film directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.
