The Gravy Waltz was written as an instrumental by jazz bassist Ray Brown. Lyrics were added by humorist/pianist Steve Allen. It was featured prominently in his 1960s late-night TV series.
Allen's recording for Dot Records received considerable airplay on middle-of-the-road radio stations.

Vocal recordings by Sarah Vaughn and Joe Williams were also popular
This piano/vocal arrangement is not difficult and gives young performers an introduction to the jazz waltz style.
