DANCE ME TO THE END OF LOVE by Leonard Cohen for Brass Band
Composed and released in 1984, Leonard Cohen's Dance Me to the End of Love, on the surface appears to be just another love song. But it also has as its inspiration from the Holocaust.
To Cohen, the idea came from hearing, reading, and knowing about the death camps: that at some camps, beside the crematoriums, a string quartet was pressed into performing while the horrors were occurring - and that the players could be next.
The lyrics, "Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin," represent the beauty of the consummation of life, the end of existence - layered with the surrender we feel for our beloved.
The song's structure is similar to a Greek Hasapiko Dance, a style he would have heard while on the Island of Hydra.
Although the theme is dark, there is a glimmer of light as Cohen searched from the raw truth to beauty, something he tried to find in all things.
This arrangement is for a British-style Brass Band featuring the Flugelhorn and the Solo Tenor Horn. These parts, along with the euphonium part, are for more advanced players. The accompaniment parts are suitable for intermediate.
