Product Description
Schubert: Ave Maria (Ellens Gesang III, D839, Op. 52 n º 6).
Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellens Gesang III, D839, Op. 52 No. 6, 1825), Ellen's Third Song, was composed by Franz Schubert in 1825 as part of his Opus 52, a seven-song setting from Walter's popular epic poem Scott, The Lady of the Lake, freely translated from German.
It became one of Schubert's most popular works, under the title of "Ave Maria", in arrangements with different lyrics that often differ from the poem's original context.
The opening words and chorus of Ellen's song, namely "Ave Maria" may lead to the idea of adapting Schubert's melody as the basis for the full text of the traditional Catholic prayer Ave Maria. The Latin version of the Ave Maria is now in common use with Schubert's melody which has given rise to the misconception that he originally wrote the melody as an arrangement for the Ave Maria.
