Prominent Afro-Haitian pianist and composer Justin Elies tango-habanera Tropical Dance No. 2 captures the appealing melodic elegance of Caribbean music. Elie studied at the Paris Conservatory and settled in the United States in 1921. His adaptations of Haitian melodies into miniatures led him to performances at Carnegie Hall and international concert venues in addition to composing music for silent films, and in 1931 his own New York radio show, The Lure of the Tropics. The brass quintet arrangement is scored for two B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, horn with alternate flugelhorn substitute part, trombone and tuba. The recording is of the entire edition.
The Music of Black Composers Series is a welcome and timely addition to the brass repertoire. Interesting music, expertly arranged, fun to perform, and well received by audiences.
