This quartet is the first in a series of quartets inspired by different forms of art. String Quartet No. 1 is inspired by the artist DD McInnes, who paints whimsical portraits where animals portray different aspects of 17th, 18th and early 19th century paintings, and which have animals, including birds, invertebrates and insects taking the place of the human sitters. This is the first movement of the quartet, titled Moderato.
