The Statue of Liberty, with its famous inscription of Emma Lazarus poem "The New Colossus", is the inspiration behind the choral work, "Mother of Exiles". Eleven of the sonnet's fourteen lines have been set for SATB a capella choir, (with some doubling), including the familiar "Give me your tired, your poor," section. When the text refers to the Statue as "Mother of Exiles", sixteen foreign language translations of that title are overlapped in layers of increasing rhythmic complexity. The music contrasts sections of taut dissonance between expansive phrases of harmonious warmth. Mother of Exiles is a perfect vehicle for high school, college and professional choirs seeking an inspirational anthem of compassion in times of need.
