This well-known traditional song is very popular amongst choirs. Well-structured melody with a moral to the story, it will suit any choir for festivals, competitions or concerts. It is a pleasure to sing and is always well received by the audience. In this SATB arrangement the third verse should be slower to reflect the somber words with a darker tone to the voices (specially in AT line) creating the ghostly feeling. This will add an extra character to the story and is fun for a choir to create. Dynamics gives the inclination of the melody line importance if appearing in a different voice than a soprano line. Each voice has their memorable own tune. The tenor line could be omitted and men could take the bass line or try SAB arrangement. Both arrangements are suitable for a cappella singers.
