By Mike Strand, ASCAP
This is a lead sheet for a jazz group, small to large, with
singer. It is the foundation for a variety of arrangements,
contrafacts, and improvisations It should appeal to a group with a
"blues" orientation.
The audio sample is a jazz swing accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my tune from Finale PrintMusic.
It has a 12-bar structure, but the underlying
chord progression differs from many typical "blues" progressions. I
characterize the "spirit" of my 12-bar structure as: Pride (first 4 bars), the Fall (middle 4 bars), and Repentance or Reconciliation (last 4 bars).
My specific lyrics in the lead sheet may refer to any individual
who has succumbed to overweening pride or unrealistic self-confidence.
It warns such an individual of the consequences of prideful behavior and
action and points to what might be needed to recover, repent, or gain
forgiveness.
This progression is the basis as well for my composition Chosen One, also for sale on this web site.
This new 12-bar chord structure can support a variety of lyrics and
tunes on the theme of pride, failure, and reconciliation.
Here are the lyrics for
A Way of Forgiving:
I was blinded by success, and I thought I was above the rest.
I forgot all that we had worked for and shared, even in the times we were poor.
Now I stand before you humbled, and hoping you'll find a way of forgiving.
... May there be a way of forgiving.
