This work, lasting over 21 minutes, is a choral setting of an ancient Greek poem by Bacchylides (c. 518 c. 451 BC), beautifully translated by the distinguished Classics scholar and poet, the late William C. Mullen of Bard College. It is a tale about the Greek hero, Theseus, and his famous dive into the sea to recover a ring thrown as a challenge by his rival, the king Minos. The work is scored for full chorus (SATB), four soloists (SATB), accompanied by Piano, Flute, Cello, Gong, Chimes, and Timpani. The work is dedicated to the memory of William C. Mullen.
