This work was dedicated to members of Smith's college saxophone department, with whom he premiered the piece. Smith's first Saxophone Quintet is a piece of music about music-making; it seeks to convey the powerful chemistry and bond forged between a group of musicians who have performed together for a number of years, and the bittersweet emotions that result from their parting. It features dense orchestration and extended harmony, syncopation and polyrhythm. The three movements are titled Camaraderie, Synchronicity, and Synergy.
