Product Description
A single movement, narrative string quartet tracing an arc from a banal, clocklike beginning through wild flights of fancy as each instrument imitates another in their own solo sections. Imagination is extinguished as the clock's hands tick slower.... slower.... ending in a breath. The opening 4-note motive furnishes the vast majority of musical material. Many different contemporary musical ideas are evoked, including atonality, bluegrass, minimalism, 5/8 dance music, 'sound effect' or noise music (after Lachenmann) and others.
Extended techniques include under-pressure, nail pizzicato, buzz pizzicato, playing on the bridge, tremolo accelerando and ritardando, proportional notation, finger-roll pizz on strings combined with glissandi, quarter tones, plectrum pizzicato, hammer-ons and pull-offs (like a guitar), half-muted pizzicato, bowing behind bridge, aleatory (like Lutosławski) both individual and combined with phasing (after Reich). Not all parts utilize all techniques.
