Woodwindly's arrangements and compositions are mostly for Wind Quintet, Clarinet Quartet, and Saxophone Quartet, although some are for other groups including String Quartet and Carrot Trio (yes, "Carrot" Trio!). Wind ensembles are our speciality because arranger, Hugh Levey, has played in them for over 40 years, as a clarinetist and saxophonist.

About the Arrangements
Many of the arrangements were written to play with fellow musicians who are friends, so it is important that each part is interesting to play and that they share the melodic material or have interesting bass lines or counter-melodies. Although some publications are available for more than one ensemble type, they are always reworked to suit the instruments involved. Hugh's musical tastes are eclectic and this is reflected in the music that he arranges. They include transcriptions of piano, choral, and orchestral works, as well as explorations of traditional melodies in a 'classical' style.

About the Arranger
Hugh graduated with an honours Music degree from the University of Manchester in 1981, where he studied clarinet with James Gregson of the Hallé Orchestra and Neville Duckworth of the RNCM. He is based in Scotland where he plays clarinet in the Melville Wind Quintet, bass clarinet in a newly-formed clarinet quartet, tenor sax with the Hulme Saxophone Quartet, saxophones with various big bands, and clarinet and bass clarinet with various orchestras. 

Hugh was flattered to find that Andrew Lloyd-Webber's father had marked his theory paper for the Associateship of the London College of Music (ALCM) examination in 1978, and given him full marks for rudiments, harmony, form and history. Sadly he lost one mark in Counterpoint, but trusts this isn't too obvious in Woodwindly's publications! Outside of music, Hugh enjoys spending time with family and has an interest in early medieval history.  Oh and if you don't believe the Carrot Trio, take a look at this video on Facebook.
