Product Description
The 167-foot-tall Ann and Robert H. Lurie Tower overlooks the University of Michigans North Campus and houses the 60-bell grand carillon that shares its name. Students of architecture, art, engineering, and performing arts constitute the audience of this instrument, with weekday recitals occurring at 1:20 PM. This unusual timeslot ensures beautiful carillon music for students walking to their 1:30 classes.
The tower was completed in 1995 and dedicated to Robert H. Lurie (19421990) in October 1996. The bronze bells of this instrument were cast by the Royal Eijsbouts Bellfoundry in Asten, Netherlands, with a bourdon weighing six tons. It is stated that architect and Michigan alumnus Charles Moore designed this tower without a single 90-degree angle in its framework. It stands as an achievement of architecture and engineering, as well as a work of art and source of musican exemplary embodiment of North Campuss identity at the University of Michigan.
During my undergraduate years at Michigan, I worked as a Resident Advisor for four years in North Campus Bursley Hall. I was fortunate enough to live on the only side of the massive building facing Lurie Tower, and could open my window to carillon music. My Lurie Tower Suite commemorates these daily window serenades and is composed with the beginning carillon student in mindthe same musicians that bring this tower to life every day.
